Cable Bracing – Can It Save A Structurally Weak Tree?
Not every tree that develops a structural weakness needs to be removed. In many cases, a technique known as cable bracing can be used to provide additional support to a tree, reducing the risk of branch or stem failure whilst allowing the tree to remain in place.
What Is Cable Bracing?
Cable bracing is an arboricultural technique that involves installing one or more flexible steel cables between the main stems or structural branches of a tree to provide additional support.
The cables are anchored to the tree using specialist hardware and are positioned so that they limit the movement of the supported sections relative to each other, reducing the risk of the union between them failing under the load of the canopy above or the force of wind.
The technique is used primarily to support trees with co-dominant stems, where two or more main stems of similar size grow from a single point and form a union that may be structurally weak. It can also be used to support individual branches that are of significant size but that show signs of weakness or excessive weight distribution.
When Is Cable Bracing Appropriate?
Co-Dominant Stems
The most common application for cable bracing is in trees with two or more co-dominant stems growing from a shared union. Where these stems form a narrow angle at their junction, the union between them can be susceptible to splitting under load, particularly in high winds or when the canopy is wet and heavy.
A cable installed between the upper portions of the co-dominant stems limits their independent movement and reduces the stress on the union below.
Overextended / Heavy Branches
Large, overextended branches that are placing excessive stress on their attachment point can sometimes be supported with cable bracing as an alternative to removal.
This approach is particularly relevant where the branch in question makes a significant contribution to the overall form and of the tree and where its removal would leave an unacceptable void in the canopy.
Trees With Significant Historic Value
Where a tree is of particular importance, whether because of its age, size, historical association or prominent position in the landscape, cable bracing may be considered as part of a longer-term management strategy to extend its useful life.
In these cases, bracing is typically used alongside other management measures such as crown reduction and regular monitoring.
What Are The Limitations Of Cable Bracing?
Cable bracing is a management tool, not a permanent fix. It reduces the risk of structural failure but cannot eliminate it entirely, and it does not address the underlying cause of the weakness.
A tree that has been cable braced still requires regular inspection and monitoring to check the condition of the cables, anchors and the union or branch being supported, and the system will need to be adjusted or replaced as the tree grows and changes over time.
Cable bracing is also not appropriate in all situations. Where a tree has significant internal decay, where the wood at the union or anchor points is unsound, or where the structural weakness is too advanced to be managed safely, removal may still be the most appropriate course of action.
A qualified tree surgeon will assess the tree thoroughly before recommending bracing, taking into account the species, the nature and extent of the weakness, the tree's overall condition and its proximity to people and structures.
How Is Cable Bracing Installed?
The installation of a cable bracing system is specialist work that must be carried out by a qualified arborist. The process involves assessing the tree to determine the most effective positioning of the cables, drilling through the stems or branches at the anchor points, installing the appropriate hardware and tensioning the cables correctly.
The system must then be documented and a programme of regular inspection put in place to monitor its condition and effectiveness over time.
