At JW Tree Surgery, we recently completed a tree management project in the village of Kirtlington, Oxfordshire involving both stump grinding and tree replanting. This job was a great example of how we combine efficient stump removal techniques with thoughtful replanting, helping to keep outdoor spaces healthy, balanced and looking their best.
The first stage of the job was to remove the remaining stump from a previously felled tree. Stumps can often be left behind for years, taking up space and restricting what can be done with the area. Our team brought in specialist stump grinding equipment to safely and effectively break the stump down below ground level.
By grinding the stump around 4 to 6 inches beneath the surface, we created a clean, usable area suitable for replanting. This method is fast, low impact and avoids the need for digging or excavation that could disturb the surrounding landscape. Once the stump grinding was complete, the site was cleared and prepared for the next stage.
With the old stump gone, we moved straight on to planting a brand new tree, a beautiful 3-metre walnut. Choosing to replace a tree after removal helps maintain biodiversity and supports the local environment. Walnut trees are a strong choice, offering structure, seasonal interest and long-term growth potential.
We carefully positioned the tree in the cleared space, making sure the root ball was properly bedded and that the tree sat upright and stable. To give it the best possible start, we installed tree stakes to keep it secure during windy conditions, helping it establish itself over time.
Newly planted trees (particularly those of this size) need consistent watering in the early stages to encourage root development. As part of the replanting, we fitted a watering system to make ongoing care easy and effective.
This system allows water to reach the roots directly, meaning the tree receives the moisture it needs without waste or surface runoff. It's a simple addition that makes a big difference, especially during dry spells or in the summer months when young trees are most vulnerable.
This job in Kirtlington was a great example of responsible tree work, removing what’s no longer viable and replacing it with something that adds value to the landscape. The client now has a fresh, attractive tree in place of an old stump, and the walnut will grow to become a defining feature of the garden in the years ahead.
At JW Tree Surgery, we believe in a balanced approach to tree care. Whether it's removing trees, grinding stumps or planting something new, we tailor every job to suit the location and the goals of the client. This project in Oxfordshire reflects that perfectly - practical work carried out with long-term results in mind.
