Last week, the team at JW Tree Surgery successfully completed a challenging sycamore tree dismantling project in Oxford.

This particular job required careful planning and precise execution to safely remove a mature sycamore whilst preserving a tall stump for local wildlife.

The property owner contacted us after noticing that their large sycamore had developed structural issues that posed potential risks to nearby buildings and pedestrian areas Following our site assessment, we recommended a controlled dismantling approach rather than complete removal.

Planning The Tree Removal

Before beginning any tree work, we conducted a thorough evaluation of the sycamore and surrounding environment. Our tree surgeons examined the tree's condition, measuring its height, trunk diameter, and assessing the proximity to neighbouring properties. The tree stood approximately 18 metres tall with a substantial canopy spread that required sectional removal.

We identified several factors that influenced our approach, including overhead power lines, a nearby garden shed, and established flower beds that needed protection during the operation.

Our team developed a comprehensive method statement that outlined each stage of the dismantling process, guaranteeing minimal disruption to the client's property and surrounding areas.

The planning phase also involved obtaining necessary permissions and notifying local authorities, as Oxford City Council requires documentation for significant tree work within certain conservation areas.

Tree Dismantling Techniques

Our tree surgeons utilised advanced rigging techniques to safely lower each section of the sycamore. Working from top to bottom, we systematically removed branches and trunk sections using specialised cutting equipment and rope systems.

This methodical approach prevented any damage to nearby structures whilst maintaining complete control over falling timber.

The dismantling process took place over two days, with our team working efficiently to minimise noise and disruption for neighbouring residents. We employed our tracked wood chipper to process smaller branches on-site, reducing the volume of material requiring transportation for disposal.

Wildlife Preservation

One unique aspect of this project involved leaving a carefully calculated stump height of approximately four metres. The client specifically requested this approach to maintain habitat for local bird species and small mammals. Our team shaped the remaining stump to create natural ledges and cavities that will serve as nesting opportunities.

We installed three purpose-built bird nesting boxes at different heights on the stump, each designed for different species commonly found in Oxford's environment. These boxes will provide great nesting opportunities whilst the stump naturally develops hollows and crevices over time.

This wildlife-conscious approach demonstrates how professional tree surgery can balance safety requirements with environmental responsibility, creating lasting benefits for local ecosystems.

Site Clearance & Waste Management

Following the successful dismantling operation, our team cleared the site to restore the area to its original condition. All timber sections, branches and debris were collected and removed from the property, leaving the garden clean and tidy.

Client Satisfaction

The project concluded with a satisfied client who appreciated our professional approach and attention to environmental considerations. We provided detailed documentation of the work completed, including photographs and recommendations for the future.

The successful completion of this sycamore dismantling project showcases JW Tree Surgery’s expertise in balancing safety requirements with environmental stewardship throughout Oxford and surrounding areas.
