As Tree Surgeons In Oxford, stump grinding is one of the most requested services we carry out following tree felling work.
What Is Stump Grinding?
Stump grinding is the process of using a purpose-built machine fitted with a rotating cutting disc to break a tree stump down into small wood chip fragments. The grinder works progressively across the surface of the stump, reducing it layer by layer until it sits below the level of the surrounding ground. The depth we grind to depends on what you intend to do with the area afterwards.
For standard turfing or replanting, grinding to around 150 to 300mm below ground level is typically sufficient. If the area is being prepared for hard landscaping such as paving or decking, a deeper grind may be required to ensure a stable, level base.
Stump Grinding Vs Removal: Which Do You Need?
These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different processes with different outcomes. Stump grinding removes the visible stump and grinds the upper root structure down below ground, leaving the deeper root system to break down naturally over time. This is the right solution for the vast majority of domestic gardens and is far less disruptive than full excavation.
Tree stump removal by full excavation involves digging out the entire root ball, which requires heavy machinery, leaves a significant void in the ground and causes considerably more disruption to the surrounding area.
This approach is generally only necessary for large-scale construction or development projects where completely clear ground is required. For most Oxford homeowners, stump grinding is the practical, cost-effective choice.
Why Leaving A Stump In The Ground Is A Problem…
A tree stump left in the ground is more than just an inconvenience. Over time, decaying stumps can attract fungi, wood-boring insects and pests, which can then spread to other healthy plants and trees in your garden.
Stumps also present a tripping hazard, particularly in lawns where they can be partially concealed by grass growth. They make mowing and general garden maintenance more awkward, and they prevent you from using that area of your garden for planting, landscaping or any other purpose. Grinding the stump out removes all of these problems in a single visit.
What Happens To The Wood Chip After Grinding
Once the stump has been ground down, you will be left with a quantity of wood chip and sawdust in the area where the stump once sat. This material can be used as a mulch around the base of other plants and trees in your garden, where it will break down slowly and return nutrients to the soil.
Alternatively, if you would prefer the area to be cleared completely, we can remove the arisings from site as part of the job. Once the material is cleared, the hollow left by the stump can be backfilled with topsoil and either turfed, seeded or prepared for planting, depending on what you have planned for the space.
